Let’s Write a Novel
Hello monkey you always call me monkey
I’ve learned to love it like your thumbs across my eyebrows
And how your hair tickles at my nose
You said you wished you’d somehow found me sooner
I wasn’t ready I was messy and unworthy
Living with mom up through my thirties
Here’s where we listen to the bands out at the park
You prefer the mystery of not seeing them play
I watch you watching all the boats out on the water
Wishing that the week had more Sundays
You told me about the malady running through your family
You said you’d go first I’d never be right again
But we’ll make a fort of this pretend
Let’s go night swimming let’s make a tree house
Let’s find that abandoned town up in Manitoba
We’ll write our novels on the sofa
How easy you tumble fluttering off to sleep
How your breathing hits my ears all soft and muted
How your dreams are the only dreams I ever like to hear
Weird how I’ve never felt so human

Salty Puddles
Just a couple of salty puddles, no big deal
You’ve been holding them, controlling how you feel
Let ‘em roll and slide on down your cheeks
Just a couple of salty puddles on your sleeve
All my friends cry and I think
maybe so should I
I should learn how to weep and keep
my brain from caving in
Just a couple of them
Crocodile eyes peak the river denial
Come to realize, it’s been a while since a smile
Time to clean what you’ve swept under the fridge
Just a couple of salty puddles
You’ll still live
All my friends cry and I think
maybe so should I
I should learn how to weep and keep
my brain from caving in
Just a couple of them

LUNCHEON ON THE GRASS
HOW MANY PIECES OF MY
DIVIDED HEART DO YOU WANT?
DO MY ESCAPES TO THE COUNTRY
COME OFF UNCONCERNED AND NONCHALANT? AT LEAST TWO SOULS WILL TUMBLE AND FALL IF NOT ALL FOUR
AND CAST AN ASHEN SHADOW
LIKE LEAVES ON THE FOREST FLOOR
AND I WILL HAVE WHAT I CAME FOR
SOMETIMES I THINK I IMAGINED HER
THIS CAN’T BE REAL
PIECED TOGETHER WITH BITS OF YOU THROUGH WEAKNESS AND A VAGUE APPEAL QUICK UPON THE EXTERNAL GUISE
THE VERDANT SHORE
YOU SEE THE PAINT FROM LIGHT TO DARK SHE SEES THE WHORE
BUT I WILL GET WHAT I PAID FOR
BOTTLES OF WARM UNTRACEABLE WINE CHERRIES AND ROUND BREAD
HASTILY SCATTERED
ALL IN THE NAME OF HOLLOW ROMANCE WHERE DID YOUR LATE AUNT’S EMERALD EARRINGS DISAPPEAR TO? LOOK BENEATH THE BLANKET
CHECK THE MAGPIE’S NEST
THERE’S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SWIM AND AN ANKLE DIP BETWEEN BARE SKIN SMELLING OF SWEET GREEN HAITIAN VETIVER AND A FULL-LENGTH SLIP
ONE’S A COUPLE AND ONE’S A PAIR TWO ARE HAPPY, TWO DESPAIR THE FALLING WATER BREAKS
THE HUSH OF THE MIDDAY AIR LEAVING US NOWHERE

Luxor and Bunny
And isn’t it funny
How nothing works out
The way it was planned
Lance and Betances
We all take our chances
But she was a woman
And you were a man
Lisa and Buster
The spiciest mustard
On all the world’s weiners
From Spain to Japan
Lucky and Betsy
You bought it on Etsy
A dark chocolate doily
For your dirty white van
Oh, we pair off
Then we square off
And we tear off
Our clothes and their labels
Our trees and our dreidels
Our soups and ladles
And we set them ablaze
Now we’re a couple
A couple of couples
Quadruple, quintuple
And onward for days
Lumpy and Bumpy
And ride me and hump me
Like camels, like desserts
Like snakes in the sand
Lawrence and Barabra
The losing of marbles
The finding of treasures
The bar codes we scan
Luke and Beyonce
The kids goes, but I’ll stay
The steeling of nerves
And the taking of stands
Linseed and Bratty
Your doggy got catty
A welcome for Matty
A raisin for Bran
Oh, we pair off
Then we square off
And we tear off
Our clothes and their labels
Our trees and our dreidels
Our soups and ladles
And we set them ablaze
Now we’re a couple
A couple of couples
Quadruple, quintuple
And onward for days

Show Me Mercy
You caught me laying in the dark again
These short days get away from me
I swear you’ve been on my list of things to do
But I’m a nervous little bunny
I brought the mail in from the mailbox
Looks like it’s getting out of hand
You said you’d call me when it’s pouring
You know I’ll always understand
Show me mercy some days are not to be believed
If you wanna make yourself some coffee
You’ll find the kitchen to the left the hall
I used to fall in love so easily
Now I can’t seem to fall at all
I brought some soup to tide you over
I’m hoping you’re a fan of pumpkin
I made it for my father who’s been ailing
But he wouldn’t let me come in
Show me mercy some days are not to be believed
Lately I loathe this time of the day
Shadows burn their shapes into the carpets
I tried to call my wife this morning
They say these first years are the hardest

Coupla
I got a couple of tickets to the big show this week
But I got no one to go with so maybe I’ll sell my seats
I got a couple of doughnuts hidden in the back of the drawer
Mom says with my braces I can’t eat them anymore
I got a couple of kitties but they don’t seem to like me
Except when I’m about to feed them and they come running to my feet
I got a couple of turtles they cost a lot of money
Now when people come over they say that it smells funny
Whatever happens over here
Has to happen over there
The world is a big collection
Of all these perfect pairs
I have a couple of builders hammering next to me
My landlords are building a hallway and driving me crazy
I got a couple of chickens squawking out in the yard
Dad says we need to eat em why is everything so hard
I got a couple of nose hairs I hope that no one sees
Every once in a while one will pop out and tickle me
I got a couple of eyeballs rolling around in my head
I wonder about what happens to them when you’re dead
Whatever happens over here
Has to happen over there
The world is a big collection
Of all these perfect pairs
Two lungs two eyes two ears two feet
But I wish we had two lives
And somehow they could meet

Just a Couple Turns
Lest these words remain unspoken
nets will catch, escape hatches will open
'cause way beyond the love you knew
I live on watch over you
Butterflies, white feather
signs I’m floating
Rainbows up, pennies dropped
trust I'm showing
that way beyond the love you knew
I live on
watch over you
The endless days
muddling through the haze
I’m the second wind
you breathe in
through the darkest nights
when your mind takes flight
I’m the star to guide your landing
The world of time
where all things end is dying
a just a couple turns
we're reuniting

Itemhood David Walker
you and me, we're an item
we're a vessel on a hot pink sea
gales of affection pushing you and me
in the tempest of a living thing
how you flitter about my thoughts
i dive into your eyes and i get lost
you and me, we're an item
we're the snow up on the mountain now
avalanche of kisses coming down
tender afterglow
whirling glitter on the mountaintop
you delve in and break the permafrost
only for this i wake
honey, i'm but your heart to break
we're but a star in a grateful night sky
no more my heart ought do
than to be one with you
than to be one

Two Wooden Matches
Two wooden matches burned out by the bed
A picture of a pine tree and a pack of cigarettes
Molly’s reading Melville Melissa paints her nails
The black bird out the window studies the details
And the tea has long grown cold
And their blood runs so slow
Molly’s dog Potato sleeping like a stone
Melissa humming quiet reaches for her phone
There’s the light on the carpet making funny shapes
And the way we can sometimes lean into our mistakes
Molly begins to drift away
As the light goes to grey
