1.
I’m Not an Answer I'm not a singer the way your mother likes I just crack it open and let it pour I'm not a lover like your old girlfriend No one's accused me of selflessness In the mornings I stay in bed too long I bite my nails I pet the cat I'm not a swimmer like Michael Phelps I just float around like a lily pad I'm not a planner I never have been I just pull up my pants and I run But I like making ice cream Watching boxing keeping score I'm not an answer to the question You asked yourself in the dark I'm just a habit you never practiced But somehow seem to know your way around And if I asked you to cut my hair I'm sure you would
2.
The World Gets Weird I can watch you through the trees See your breath and how you breathe Split the universe in half Like a sociopath There’s a jagged crooked line Slicing everything inside Pulls my guts out of my mouth Defining all that we’re about In the thickened winter air Watch the forest disappear Brush your hair out of your eyes Everything is a surprise I’m descending from above Will I ever be enough Carry you into the night Collapse the lines we circumscribed If our particles collide Like a bumper car ride If the planets should align To reveal some design I will be here I will be near Watching as the world gets weird
3.
This Book in Me I’m telephoning from a pay phone Like it’s 1985 It’s a number I remember From when you were alive It’s ringing into infinity And I’m worried you’ll pick up So I drop it like it’s hot and I get into my truck It’s the morning and it’s raining And I’m feeling insane I’ve been writing I’ve been drinking Like the authors that we loved It’s reductive I’m destructive And I’m close to giving up I went home to our town To get some details straight When I fled I think I said I’m not long for this place It’s the morning and it’s raining And I’m feeling insane Time changes everything I’m tethered here by see through string I think I’ve got a book in me Ripe with possibility I think that I am starting to believe
4.
This One Night I undressed you as though you couldn’t undress yourself Confessed to you the habits as a kid and how I asked for help Went down on you in a manner that conveyed unspoken trust Brought you to that place where your face grew hot and flushed I am easy on the eyes never ponder suicide Paint within the lines never disappear But I think we’ve only got this one night here I think we’ve only got this one night here I listened to your words accepted you as a sinner And really if you asked I’d bring you home for Christmas dinner Ringing in the new year we’d sing that Auld Lang Syne I’d sneak into your bedroom after parents have all resigned I am gentle with my hands never make absurd demands Hardly every front I am as I appear But I think we’ve only got this one night here I think we’ve only got this one night here I fall asleep so easy if you’re not here in the morning Thank you for this evening and really no hard feelings

about

This is a the first in a series of monthly eps for 2017 in which I have invited friends to take my songs and "produce" them. I recorded the songs to a click track and sent the producers the raw tracks along with chords and lyrics and gave them free range to do as they saw fit. It is as much about their vision for the song as mine in writing it. I've included stripped down demos to get a sense of the arc each song has taken.

All proceeds from this series will go to either Planned Parenthood, Southern Poverty Law Center or the SPCA. Just message me with your preference.
