Electricity

Electricity
Drinking beers
In your grandmother’s car
In the garage
With the lights off
And you whispered
Imagine being old
Hardly able to remember this
And you kissed me
The musty smell
Of the leather
The sound of a TV
Muffled through the wall
Electricity running
From your finger
To my finger
And into my brain
Well I can remember
I remember everything
I can remember
I remember everything

Midway

Midway
Out past the burnt down schoolhouse
Past the dry riverbed
Across barren fields past the steel mill
You'll find the old midway
Cars still swaying purposefully
In the autumn wind.
All the way up at the top
In the old Ferris Wheel
Leland and Olive first kissed
Some hot summer night
Though their ashes are scattered
All about lake Eerie
I’ve still got a postcard
With Olives scratch scrawl

Paint
She awakes to the sound of salt trucks salting the street and thinks of her cats and their paws and they way they’ll lick them and she’ll have to clean them in the tub and probably get scratched.
Putting her fingers to mouth, she feels her sore lips and smiles. She turns to the mirror on the back of her door and makes a mean face then laughs then stops abruptly. Her mom is still sleeping and she doesn’t want to wake her yet.
Still in bed she draws the curtain aside and looks out at the fresh snow and how clean everything is and wishes she could paint.

Rewind
Coins clutched tight in your fist
At the edge of a jagged cliff
She says make a wish
And you think of a time when you were nine
You wish these days away
Avert her steady gaze
She asks but you won’t say
You want to rewind time

Change
Stacy in the station
With her bags and her umbrella
Men clearing limbs from the tracks
As a dog on a rope howls
There’s a lady and a baby
And she thinks she might be crazy
Stacy thinks about her mother
And how she got so old so fast
How something happens right in front of you
But you don’t notice because you’re too close
Stacy wonders how she’s changed
How she looks different
She’s seen herself in pictures
But always feels the same
Well that’s gonna change

Scattered

Scattered
With the shops all boarded up
And the seaweed mixed in snow
And the ocean looming large
And with everything you know
Take a box of faded photos
Scatter them across the sand
All the thoughts that have long lingered
That you’ll never understand
Call the name into the air
See it dangle there before you
A piñata wild and festive
Smash the candy to the floor

Spaceman
I’m in the bath and I can hear my mother’s laugh
My lung’s collapsed and I’ve been out of school a month
It’s almost summer and I’m almost twelve
My friends are coming over soon
I sink into the water until my head is nearly under
And the laughter softens
Breathing through my nose
Eyes shut tight
I can feel the earth turning
And I can feel myself turn too
I’m something like a spaceman
In some kind of spaceship
Today I am a rocket
And I like it

Keepsakes

Keepsakes
Lily’s in the backyard
On her knees in the dirt
Looking for a buried box
Of keepsakes;
A pack of gum, a stone, some lipstick,
Her diary and a picture
Of a boy she thought she loved.
Overhead a bird in a maple tree
Watching Lily’s every move
Looking for worms
As the wind ruffles its feathers.
There was a stick in the ground,
A branch of white birch
That once marked the spot
But the dog must have taken it.
In her pocket Lily has
A picture of a new boy
And the matches to burn
The pages of her diary she
Doesn’t want read.

Fallen
I Swear tonight there’s something in the air
That makes us crazy
I watch you her from the window and see her eyes
Tonight they’re marbles glowing
I sneak downstairs to get a better view
Careful not to wake my mother in her bedroom
Across from the porch I see a light on
And they’re fighting in the glow
Of the bug lamp
Turn around she says to me
It’s not our concern
Fall asleep tonight my dear
And I’ll see you in your dreams
The apples all fallen from the tree
This time of year I get nervous
I guess I’m always nervous if I really think about it
Why’d you call to me through leafless trees
I just want sleep tonight
Tonight I want to sleep like I’m dead
And forget the things that haunt me

Plagued
Snow is melting from the path
I’ll try and cover up my tracks
No matter I do
Can’t seem to avoid you
Soon the light will leave the sky
It won’t stop you from trying
To find me where I go
Even through this softened snow
Trees will bend to give me cover
With the hopes you won’t discover
Where I sleep tonight
Unencumbered by the moonlight
Don’t you remember the path that led us here
Surely there’s some reason I need to disappear
If the cold should steal my heat
I won’t take it as defeat
And upon your finding me
Set beneath this canopy
Will you right the wrongs
That have plagued me for so long
